Why sleep matters to mental health

Sleep and mental health run on the same wiring. Poor sleep doesn't just follow a bad mood — it predicts the next one. Fragmented sleep raises anxiety and irritability the following day, while chronic insomnia approximately doubles the risk of developing depression, according to a meta-analysis by Baglioni et al. (2011).

Tracking hours and quality matters because they tell different stories: you can sleep eight hours and still wake unrefreshed if the night was broken. A few weeks of entries usually reveal whether a bad night is random or a pattern.
