Writing puts a thought outside your head, where you can look at it instead of being swept along by it. That small act of externalizing — naming a feeling, finishing the sentence — measurably lowers its intensity, a finding from affect-labeling research (Lieberman et al., 2007). It's the mechanism behind most evidence-based writing therapies.
You don't need to write well, or much, or daily. A few honest lines when something is on your mind is enough. Over time, rereading shows you how you thought then versus how you think now — sometimes the most useful insight of all.
